Canaan- the city that lies along the Mediterranean Sea and is where the Israelites are from
1- the number of gods the Israelites believed in
Monotheism- the opposite of polytheism; the belief of there being only one god
Hebrew- the language the Israelites spoke
Judaism- an ancient monotheistic religion founded over 3500 years ago; what the Israelite faith is today known as
Mesopotamia- where the Israelites came from according to the Bible
Abraham- a man who the Israelites believe they were descended from
Jacob- the name of Abraham's grandson
Israel- a name Jacob was also called
12- the number of sons Jacob raised, according to the Bible, that divided into separate family tribes
Slaves- what the Israelites were during their time in Egypt
Moses- was saved by the pharaoh's daughter, raising him as his own child, and a prince of Egypt
Freedom- what Moses believed God told him to leave the Israelites to
10- the number of plagues the Bible says God sent to Egypt to get the Pharaoh to free the Israelites
Children- all male children were killed when God sent the last plague
Passover- the holiday Jews celebrate in remembrance of how God "passed over" their homes during the 10th plague.

Mount Sinai- the place where the Bible says God gave Moses the law of Jews
Torah- the first part of the Hebrew Bible
Covenant- an agreement with God that the Torah describes; God promised to return the Israelites to Canaan if they follow his laws
Ten Commandments- the most important part of the Torah
40 years- how long it probably took the Israelites to reach Canaan (the Promised Land)
Deborah- a woman that the Israelites looked to judges for leadership after Joshua died
